Now, while we love the reference to the store

When marks ans spencers you think of all the style icons and models you might want to have in your next high budget advertising campaign, Helena Bonham Carter doesn’t immediately spring to mind. Yet, she has been unveiled as the star of M&S’ new Christmas ad campaign as it seeks to boost its festive sales.
Christmas TV ads are big business for high street retail giants these days. John Lewis has got it right over the last couple of years by pulling on any heart string it can, coupling emotive music (cover versions of Heart radio playlist favourites from lilting female singer-songwriters) and evocative story-lines.
We had the boy who couldn’t wait to surprise his mum with his gift on Christmas morning (hopefully it was none of the macabre suggestions that did the rounds on Facebook – you people are all kinds of wrong) and the snowman going that extra mile to pick out the perfect hat and glove set for his snow-lady (strangely heart-warming, even if she was his fancy frost-woman).
Models David Gandy, as a very suave Mad Hatter, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley playing a seductive, soft-focus Alice/Red Riding Hood, star alongside Bonham Carter’s wizard, marks ans spencers in an Alice in Wonderland/Wizard of Oz/Arabian Nights mash up.
Now, while we love the reference to the store’s Magic and Sparkle catchphrase and we’re fully behind everything style director Belinda marks ans spencers Earl is doing for our favourite high street chain, we’re somewhat bemused as to how they arrived at their new fashion marks ans spencers star.
Helena Bonham Carter isn’t really known for her sartorial nous after all (that’s us being polite). She’s often caught out and about in London looking a little deshabille, marks ans spencers shall we say?
Or, she’s spotted appearing on red-carpets with her equally eccentric beau, Tim Burton, marks ans spencers looking like she’s off trick or treating once she’s done with all the inconvenient photo-calls and autograph signing – a look that is only strictly relevant for one week of the year.
But, as we’re rather sentimental types that tend to lap up stories of snow-people marks ans spencers buying marks ans spencers each other Christmas presents and those soppy Christmas cover versions, we’ve currently got everything crossed for Marks and Sparks and their big budget festive ad.
