I was heading to the motor tax office yesterday and saw this on the front of the Examiner, so ya I didn't bother taxing the car as my tax is over a grand these days, to all the garda out there thanks and keep up the good work. It is not known the extent to which all rank-and-file garda will refuse to issue the fines or whether there will be different approaches in garda divisions. The discretion also extends to illegal parking, though the policing of that is mainly carried out by traffic wardens. The GRA already announced it was turning off the goodwill tap of work they traditionally did for the force outside what was required of them. Members no longer use their own personal equipment, including brea plaza 5 cars, mobile phones, laptops or cameras, for work, and are no longer volunteering for non-public overtime, such as for sports events and concerts.

I thought they put a stop to all that? Not yet, they had threatened to put a stop to it, but legally if your car is parked up off the road, mechanical problems or just using your wife's car for a change, I don't think they can force you to pay a full years tax. Anytime I had to get a Garda stamp for declaration of non use there was no questions asked. So what could well happen when the property tax comes in, people might seek the declarations stamped by the Guards, to offset some of the property tax burden,
